On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck Miami with losses that had never been seen in America before.  Andrew caused most carrier to stop writing property coverage in the state and a state pool the Florida Joint Underwriting Association FJUA (now known as Citizens) was formed to provide coverage for Florida homeowners.  A special hurricane wind deductible percentage was established forcing Florida homeowners to participate in future losses.  It was believed that adding a wind percentage deductible would give the FJUA stability and attract private carriers back to the state.  So how exactly does a wind deductible work?

The wind deductible is a percentage–typically 2, 5 and 10 percent–of coverage A which is the insured Dwelling value.  For example a 100,000 coverage “A” policy with a 10% wind deductible has a 10,000 deductible.  These Deductibles are annual so that if you experience more than one loss in a year you are only assessed the deductible one time.  The wind deductible is assessed when your home is damaged by a named storm/hurricane.  Additionally some carriers have a deductible called “Other Wind” which refers to a non-named storm deductible.  For any other type of covered loss on your policy you will have what is called an “All Other Peril” deductible and this number traditionally is a dollar amount 500, 1000, 2500 or more.

When shopping for hurricane coverage it is important to note that there are minimal savings in increasing a wind deductible on your policy.  The best way to shop for coverage is to receive quotes from multiple carriers as prices vary significantly.  Additionally some carriers give money saving perks such as disappearing wind deductibles.  A disappearing deductible is given to clients with no wind claims for 5 years or more and are free perks.

Home Insurance in Florida is a significant investment knowing your deductible options is important as we head into Hurricane season.

For over 20 plus years I have been asked by parent after parent how much will my teen’s insurance cost and which vehicle is best to purchase for a teen? I have probably quoted 10’s of thousands of scenarios since 1988 with any and all carriers that have written auto insurance in the US. Now my time has come so I decided to go a bit further than I ever have. Like many of you I was nervous about this stage of life, I wanted to make sure my daughter was safe. I decided to not only focus on insurance cost but also safety ratings, customer satisfaction and vehicle cost. Like any good parent/Insurance Agent I took to the net to research vehicles. My focus was on crossover SUV’s. I spent days researching consumer rating bureaus like Edmunds. For safety I sought out the expertise of the Insurance Institute. I sifted through vehicle warranties and ranked them. Finally, I pulled up vehicle base prices to compare them. With all that work I realized that I did not want to keep the info to myself, so I decided to share it with you. Here is what I came up with. I hope this helps you make a more informed decision for your teen driver.

As a counterpart of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday. This shopping day is held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving.  First observed in 2010 it was a way to promote and support our local small business owners.  Nationally 1 in 5 small businesses are owned by families, people just like you and I. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses accounted for 63 percent of the net share of new jobs over the past six years. 48% of all people employed in America work for small businesses.  Supporting your local small business is a great way to insure future jobs in your community.  As a small business owner myself for over 25 years, I understand the importance of referrals from friends, family and the community.  For this reason, I would like to promote a few of our local business partners and friends.  Here are some creative holiday gift ideas.

Thank you all – happy holidays.

The answer is yes and no.  We often get calls from clients at the rental car counter asking if they should purchase or waive the coverage offered by the rental car company.  So what is the correct answer and what is the cheapest way to get insured?  Personal Auto Insurance coverage extends to vehicles you borrow and rent.  The Insurance extended to you by your carrier is the coverage listed on your policy declarations page.  Liability, PIP and Uninsured Motorist will extend to the rental vehicle as may the Physical Damage, remember that you will be responsible for any deductibles on the policy.  The issue with renting a car is in your policy limitations.  If you do not have certain coverage or have low limits you may be left with a shortfall.  Another problem in renting a vehicle is the “loss of use”.  If you are involved in an accident with a rental vehicle that company is entitled to the daily rental rate while that vehicle is being repaired.  Loss of use is not covered by any auto policy.  Fortunately, some credit card companies do offer “loss of use” coverage if you use their credit card to rent the vehicle (always check with your credit card companies first).

Thus the cheapest way overall to rent a vehicle is to ask your credit card company what Insurance they include and make sure your primary auto policy covers you for Liability and physical damage.  If you have all these bases covered you can consider waiving coverage.  Always check with a licensed agent first before waiving any Insurance.

Safe travels.

For years I have been asked by clients this question and for years the answer is the same “maybe”. While most reputable Health Carriers choose to Coordinate Benefits with Auto Insurance some simply exclude Auto Injury all together. For those who have health policies with Auto Exclusions, it is important to maximize your Medical and Uninsured Motorist coverage in the event of a loss. Medical payments and Uninsured Motorist are intended to cover your medical expenses when injured in an accident. You can also maximize the Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage by purchasing an Umbrella which includes UM. The national average medical cost for non-fatal injury from auto-related accidents is approximately $60,000. I suggest you read your health insurance summary of benefits. Mine was 245 pages so I decided to use the find function on my computer. I was able to quickly find the Auto related limitations.

If your carrier coordinates benefits with Auto Insurance here is how that works. In an auto accident, your auto insurance is primary coverage, any deficit in payment would fall to your Health Carrier. Your Health Carrier would then review what has been paid by the Auto Carrier in order to determine if you have any benefit left. This means that if your Auto Carrier paid the max that your Health Carrier would have been responsible for they could deny any additional payment. Pretty complicated right? Yes, this is why I always recommend that clients carry Uninsured Motorist to eliminate gaps. We are all unfortunately subject to our plan deductibles and limitations. Uninsured Motorist coverage has very few limitations and could make you whole after an accident.

Always read the fine print and get the advice of a licensed agent when deciding what coverage to purchase.
